A few days ago, I got to hang out with Brittany, Sam and student midwife Jenna while they cared for a patient during a prenatal appointment and a 6 week postpartum visit. Sam alone has attended over 400 births!
Their knowledge and passion is incredible – and you can FEEL the genuine love they have for their clients. Imagine walking in the room for your postpartum check up and the midwife who delivered your baby gives you a huge hug and is so happy to hold your newborn while you tell them everything that’s been happening since the newest member of your family arrived.
They listen. They commiserate and offer encouragement and resources and a soft place to land – all while intermittently taking yours and baby’s vitals and measurements.
Midwives see you throughout your pregnancy, listening to your baby and monitoring all aspects of your health. They can suture and stop hemorrhage and administer medication and monitor throughout pregnancy/labor/delivery and beyond. They are skilled in the unlikely event of newborn resuscitation and delivering babies in the craziest of positions. And if you end up wanting/needing a hospital transfer during your labor? They’ll be there, too.
But perhaps even more amazing is the role they play in maternal outcomes. They genuinely want to take care of you and offer a village, which is something we’re all-too-often missing.
