After finding out you’re pregnant, the next step is to start thinking about what you might want/need in preparation for your little one’s arrival. Although it can feel overwhelming trying to work out what you need and when in pregnancy, it’s a good idea to shop for the essentials in advance so that you are as prepared and stress-free as possible before your baby arrives. Here are some items that you should consider investing in!
When it comes to clothing, there are a few different types of items that you will want to purchase ahead of time. Firstly, comfortable sleepwear and loungewear are essential for both pregnancy and after you give birth. Maternity leggings and yoga pants were a godsend during my pregnancies and got me through those last few months when everything felt uncomfortable. In the summertime, cute dresses were flattering and didn’t require any waistbands! Hallelujah!
Opt for loose-fitting clothing with natural fabrics such as cotton or bamboo that are breathable and gentle on your skin. If you plan to breastfeed, invest in a couple of nursing tops and bras that can grow with you during pregnancy and transition to providing easy access when feeding your newborn.
During pregnancy, your body is working overtime and you have an increased need for vitamins and minerals such as folate, iron, and calcium. Plus, many of us have trouble eating a balanced diet when we are dealing with food aversions and morning sickness.
Your healthcare provider will likely recommend taking a prenatal vitamin. Do your research and work with your maternity care team to find one that suits you and your growing babe!
This was a lifesaver working on my feet in the last trimester during my first pregnancy. As your belly grows and your center of gravity shifts, it’s common to experience back pain, sacroilliac (SI) joint pain, and hip and abdomen soreness. Many women find relief by wearing a supportive belly band or belt. These stretchy bands help keep your belly from feeling “heavy” and provide back support as well.
One of the best parts of pregnancy for me was the excitement of learning about what was happening in my body with my growing baby every week. Find a few books and apps and enjoy the process of getting to know your new little one and what they’re up to as the months go by. You’ll also likely get some helpful hints for different pregnancy issues as they arise.
It may be easier said than done, but try to relax and take care of yourself as much as possible during this special time in your life! Sometimes the days feel long but it will pass quickly and your little one will be here before you know it!
